What is Sun Damage?

Sun damage refers to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the skin, leading to conditions such as sunburn, premature aging (photoaging), hyperpigmentation, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Prolonged and unprotected sun exposure is the primary cause of sun damage.

What Causes Sun Damage?

This condition is caused by a combination of factors. These factors include:
Sun damage can lead to sunburn, dark spots (sunspots), fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and an increased risk of skin cancer due to DNA damage in skin cells.
While some effects, like pigmentation, can be improved with treatments like chemical peels, laser therapy, and retinoids, not all sun damage is reversible. Prevention is key.
Prevention involves wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours.
No tan is safe, as tanning indicates skin damage. Sunscreen reduces the risk but does not eliminate it. The best protection is to avoid tanning altogether.
Signs include deep wrinkles, leathery skin, extensive hyperpigmentation, and the development of actinic keratoses (precancerous lesions). Any new or changing spots should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
